French Armillary Sphere, Large, 1820
The ancient Ptolemaic concept placed earth at the center of the universe. Made for science, armillary spheres appealed to the world of magic as well. Possibly the largest collection of armillaries is displayed in the private office of Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Most anitque armillaries, the size and scope of this new creation, are now part of a museum or major library collection. Armillaries were orginally designed to act as a focal point in architecture. Positioned in the center of a classical garden, at both sides of imposing marble terraces leading down to it, or even crowning a roof... few have survived despite being crafted in wrought iron.
