Phrenology HeadRead my Mind Ingenious... Lack of understanding of the functioning of body and mind made Victorian scientists come up with some pretty bizarre ideas. They believed that all the 'faculties', as they called them, were located in particular areas of the brain. By measuring skulls they could define the type and character of any person. Penal colonies were a great testing ground for Phrenologists, as these specialists were called. And every Victorian medical doctor needed a bust to adorn his study. A tool of the Trade so to speak. Intellectual, energetic, moral faculties and the area of Love were the main categories. All in all 48 categories, some hardly recognizable in our time. All precisely drawn on the Head's proper locations. Like their Staffordshire china originals these Phrenological heads are made in fine crackled porcelain. H. 30cm, 12". |
